In 1840 Harzburg was the first town on the edge of the Harz railway connection. Other towns Sprang up rapidly around the North German, low mountain ranges over longer distances. Rail track penetrated ever deeper into the mountains. For many years these line were determined to be the railway road before the German division led to the first line closures in 1945. Another important loss to the railways was in the 1960s, from heavy competition from the road.
